Study Skills—The Advantage Your Student Needs

Beth Samuelson here, and I’ve been reading Why Don’t Students Like School? by cognitive scientist Daniel T. Willingham.

This particular quote about his students has really stood out to me: “{T}hey got to college in spite of their study skills, not because of them.” It really speaks to how “we” take for granted that students just “know” or pick up study skills and strategies intuitively.

That’s not how it happens.

Helping students learn “how to learn” should begin around 4th or 5th grade. Thereafter, skill building should be practiced and reinforced as the workload increases through middle and high school. Students acquire study strategies through direct instruction and reinforcement through continuous practice.

Boost Executive Function Skills

Give Your Student the Study Skill Advantage

You may be asking yourself, “Why can’t I do this with my student at home? I know how to organize and take notes… I was an ‘A’ student in high school.”

You know the answer—your adolescent can’t hear it from you. (It’s the same exact reason why my teen has her own coach!).

Ease the learning struggles and help your student get into college (or other post high school endeavors) because of their study skills, not in spite of.
